Apply to the Lewis W. Butler Foundation Scholarship


We at the Lewis W. Butler Foundation are excited to be awarding our second round of scholarships in Fall 2023 for students entering their freshman, sophomore, and junior years of college.

Scholarships will be evaluated and awarded in May 2023, with amounts ranging from $2,000 to $10,000 per year.

For this scholarship, we are are excited to support rising college freshman, sophomores, and juniors who are currently enrolled or are planning to enroll in the following programs or majors:

  • Architecture, interior design, or landscape architecture
  • Industrial design
  • Graphic design, illustration, or animation
  • Urban design or city planning

In addition, we will consider the following criteria when we evaluate applications:

  • Under-represented in design: Student identifies as one or more of the following: Black, Indigenous, and/or person of color; woman; member of the the LGBTQ+ community; person with disability; first-generation to attend college; undocumented; or has very significant financial need.
  • Financial need for scholarship support
  • Career potential: Ability to succeed in program of choice (but motivation and goals are more important than GPA!)
  • Geographic area: Preference to students who grew up in, attend / attended school in, or otherwise have ties to the SF Bay Area or California

You must also have a recommendation submitted by a teacher or another person in your life who can comment on your skills and experience with design. You are responsible for sending them the recommendation form and this form must be completed for your application to be considered.

There will be a space on the application to upload up to two multimedia files of design or visual art(s) projects.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis through March 31st, 2023. Scholarship finalists may also be asked to submit high school and/or college transcripts.
